In relation to mortgage loans what constitutes a low credit score?

I have been reading lots about the housing crisis and have learned that the loans for new mortgage loans for people with low scores it getting harder to aquire. What constitutes a low score? 600? 590? 650? 625? I am now ready to buy my first house and am finding out that my scores may prevent me from getting a loan.
how can i improve my credit score to be able to get a lower rate mortgage?
i am currently at 630.
i want to qualify for some mortgage loans with lower interests. and for that i probably need around 750 or so score.
how can i get to that score in a year?

I’ve heard that mortgage companies may lower the credit score requirement sometime next week. Is this true? As an example: They have a requirement now for your score to be 700 with 5% down in order to qualify, or 680 with 10% down to qualify. I’ve heard they will be dropping the credit score a little so more people can obtain mortgage loans. Has anyone heard this?
